Keep Trees Trimmed Away From Your Roof

Once the leaves have fallen, it’s a good time to do some tree trimming.  There are a few reasons you need to keep trees trimmed away from your roof.

Damage to Your Roof. . .

Large trees have large branches.  Homes that enjoy the beauty of these priceless trees can also suffer the consequences when a storm causes the tree to lose a branch or worse.  A decent size branch can puncture your roof, the decking and become a bedroom fixture.  Even smaller branches just lightly grazing a roof slope will grow into larger branches effectively scratching the granulation off your shingles.

Leaves on Your Roof. . .

Fallen leaves can cause drainage issues if piled up in a roof valley or in your gutters, see our previous blog on clogged gutters for more on this topic.  Fall is easier to clean in the yard than on a ladder.

Animals on Your Roof. . .

Those who have a tree right next to a roof, probably have frequent visitors on that roof.  Squirrels can easily get onto roofs using different methods, but raccoons usually only use a tree…and at night.  No big deal right?  Wrong.  These animals will pick at lead boots on plumbing stacks which can cause leaks and interior damages.  Raccoons will turn hidden nooks of your roof into their personal lavatory.  As well as damage shingles in their middle of the night shenanigans, and you may not find out until you have a leak or other problem.

Moral of the story. . .

Keep your trees trimmed back away from your roof and your gutters unclogged. This will create a longer lasting roof and eliminate any unnecessary issues due to animals on the roof or branches falling. Keep those leaves out of your gutters by adding a new gutter cover to your gutters and enjoy your fall festivities instead of cleaning out your gutters.
