It’s important to choose the right kind of gutter profile as it can affect your gutters’ ability to divert rainwater away from your roof. In general, you have two choices: half-round and K-style gutters. Which is better?
K-style gutters are the most popular type of gutters in the country. They’re quite versatile as they can be mounted on a wide variety of roofing systems. However, K-style gutters are usually mounted on sloped roofs and installed in homes in areas that receive a large amount of rainfall, thanks to their large capacity. And, if you’re particular about your home’s exterior design, K-style gutters’ versatility extends to architectural styles: they mimic Colonial-style crown molding, but complement a wide variety of architectural styles.
Another advantage of K-style gutters is that they’re easy to install. Since they’re flat on one side, they can be easily mounted on the fascia board. Their ease of installation also makes them popular among DIYers. Keep in mind DIY gutter installations almost always end up costing homeowners more in the long run, which is why it’s best to let a professional contractor handle gutter installations, roof repair and roofing-related work in general.
Half-round gutters are trickier to install than K-style gutters, but they are easier to clean. Since they’re mainly composed of a round tube, there aren’t a lot of spaces where leaves and other kinds of debris can accumulate. Half-round gutters are usually installed on the roofing systems of older homes with rounded rooflines, a feature that’s common in homes built before the 1950s.
