Needless to say, there are several things that affect the cost of a roof replacement job. The more obvious ones are the scale of the project and your choice of materials. One factor that you probably didn’t consider is the pitch or slope of your roof. But how exactly does the pitch affect the price of replacing your roof?
The pitch of your roof refers to how steep it is. Roofers calculate this by looking at how much height or rise your roof gains for every 12 inches horizontally. This measurement is expressed using a fraction. For instance, a roof that has a pitch of 4/12 means that it gains 4 inches in height for every 12 inches. The most common roof pitch is between 4/12 and 9/12. Roofs with a pitch of 2/12 or lower is considered flat even though they are slightly angled.
The simple answer is this: the steeper the slope of your roof is, the harder your roofer has to work during a roof repair or replacement job. There is an inherent danger in working on a roof even if it is flat. You have to remember that there is always a risk for someone to fall and get injured while working on your roof.
A roofer charges more for steep roofs because they are not considered “walkable”. But the added difficulty isn’t the only reason. Extra safety equipment like harnesses, rigging and scaffolding will also be required for a roof with a steep angle, and the estimate you receive from any roofing contractor will definitely reflect that.
If you are looking for an experienced roofer to properly install steeply angled roof, then you’ve come to the right place.
