Is It OK to Replace the Gutters and Roof Simultaneously?

Home improvements – such as roof and gutter replacement – are necessary to keep your home functional and appealing. Roof replacement is usually a major project that requires thorough planning. Often, homeowners wonder if they should also replace their gutters at the same time as their roofs. Continue reading for some tips on whether to schedule your roof and gutter replacement simultaneously.

When to Replace Your Gutters

Your contractor will examine your gutters for signs of damage. A few repairs may keep them intact if they have minor holes or gaps. However, some forms of damage can no longer be repaired, especially if the gutter system is nearing the end of its service life. If the gutters are visibly rusted, cracked or sagging, it would be best to replace them along with your roof.

When to Keep Your Existing Gutters

Sometimes, it’s unnecessary to replace your existing gutters when replacing your roof. For example, if your gutters are relatively new and in good condition, you can wait a little longer before getting new ones. However, if your contractor suggests replacing them, inquire about the nature of the problem. Reliable contractors will have no trouble providing an explanation for their recommendation. If their explanation doesn’t convince you or you believe your gutters are still in good shape, it wouldn’t hurt to get a second opinion.
