Factors That Affect a Roof’s Wind Resistance

Wind is among the leading causes of roofing wear, and is not something that humans can control. However, we have the next best thing: the means to make roofs wind-resistant. 

How Does Wind Cause Roofing Damage?

It is known that wind can slowly erode a roof’s surface over time. But the real damage is caused by high speed winds hitting the roof from two directions. The first is roughly parallel to the ground and hits the roofing plane directly, which can tug at components like shingles and flashing and pry them loose. This would expose the components under the roof to moisture infiltration, resulting in rot and leaks as well as mold growth.

High speed winds that hit the walls below the roof change direction, resulting in updrafts that hit the roof’s edge from the bottom. It can cause damage to the soffits and fascia, along with the gutters — or may completely tear them off. High speed winds coming from this direction can also exert pressure on the framing and weaken it.

Factors That Affect a Roof’s Wind Resistance

Roofers and roofing manufacturers take into consideration the factors below, which can help improve a roof’s wind resistance — or can make the roof more vulnerable if ignored.

  • Installation. A properly designed and built roof is more resistant to wind damage. Following the fastener patterns as prescribed by the manufacturer, spacing the soffits properly, and choosing the right roofing pitch can all contribute to a roof’s wind resistance.
  • Materials. The heavier the roofing material, the better their lift resistance. This is one of the reasons why tile and slate roofs are considered to be good investments. However, manufactured materials like asphalt shingles can be designed to resist wind lift, such as the Owens Corning® Duration® Series Shingles.
  • Age. A roof’s wind resistance declines with age, but regular maintenance can help keep age-related wear to a minimum.
  • Surrounding foliage. Having trees in your property has its advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, trees are natural windbreakers that can help diffuse high speed winds. However, wind can break tree limbs that can fall on your roof and damage it. Trees with shallow roots may also get uprooted and severely damage your home.
