Roofing care and maintenance are best left to professionals. However, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t keep an eye on your roof between appointments with your roofer. In today’s post, Christian Brothers Roofing shares some tips that can help you care for your roof — and extend its service life.
Leaks are indicative of larger roofing problems. Therefore, you shouldn’t ignore signs of a leak no matter how insignificant it may seem. It may help to follow the signs to confirm whether the signs are caused by a hole in the roof or a plumbing leak to make sure you call the right professional for the job. Whatever the cause may be, having the leak fixed in a timely manner is important: the sooner repairs are done, the less repairs will be needed.
Regular visual inspections complement your scheduled maintenance appointments with your roofer. Take the time to inspect your roof at least once a year, keeping an eye out for signs of damage, such as displaced or missing shingles and flashing, misaligned gutters and worn-out shingles. As the homeowner, you are not expected to fix roofing problems you may find, but to call for repairs as soon as you find such problems.
Roof inspections merely require a pair of binoculars and something to record your findings, such as a good old-fashioned notebook or your smartphone. Train your binoculars on every inch of the roofing surface, paying attention to vulnerable areas such as where the roofing plane meets a wall, chimney or another roofing plane. Surrounding areas, such as gutters, soffits and gables, must also be inspected.
If you’re already working with a roofer, make sure that you keep their contact information up to date. In addition to having it handy during storm-related roofing emergencies, it can also save you the frustration of having to look for the company online.
