What You Need to Know About Gutter Sludge, Slime and Silt

Open gutters run the risk of debris buildup that severely hampers their draining performance. Whether the accumulation is slime, sludge or silt, it should be dealt with promptly to keep your gutters in shape.

Gutter Slime

Algae can develop on the roof if regular cleaning is overlooked, leaving its surface stained and slimy. And when it rains, the green slime mixes with the water that flows into your gutters. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always get drained along with the runoff — the slime remains trapped inside the gutter system instead, contributing to its congestion.

Gutter Sludge

Leaves, pine needles and other loose debris can find their way inside your gutters, especially if your home has plenty of adjacent trees. Over time, the accumulated debris decomposes into a soupy mass at the bottom of the gutters, making it hard to clean and get rid of. Sludge not only compromises the gutters’ draining ability — the additional weight it generates also puts strain on the gutters, causing them to pull away from the fascia.

Gutter Silt

Air or water sometimes carries small particles that resemble clay and sand, and dumps them inside your gutters. These are called silt, and they can build up inside the gutters and downspouts. Aside from creating blockages, silt can also wear down the gutter material because of their corrosive properties, leading to rust and leaks. Regular gutter cleaning may be able to prevent silt – and slime or sludge – from clogging the system, but a trusted roofer and gutter specialist like Christian Brothers Roofing has a much better solution.
