What Is a Roofing Underlayment?

The underlayment is a protective material sandwiched between the shingles and the decking. While the decking or sheathing creates a barrier between your living space and the outdoors, underlayment can prevent moisture from entering your home. 

There are three main roofing underlayment types. They are synthetic, felt and self-adhered. Besides its strength, synthetic underlayment is known for water and mold resistance. Felt is an older material, but many professionals still use it today. Self-adhered underlayment is easy and quick to install, speeding up the roof replacement process.

While not all underlayment products are completely waterproof, many possess excellent water resistance. If some shingles develop damage or go missing during a storm, this component will prevent water from infiltrating and harming the structure underneath.
